Head to the roof of a department store for an unexpected delight: playgrounds! We’re big fans of the rooftop playground at the Odakyu department store in Shinjuku.

Speaking of rooftops, if you can’t find a playground, there’s nearly always a rooftop garden atop a department store. My favorite is the Q Garden at Marui in Shinjuku, but the rooftop garden at Mitsukoshi in Ginza is not to be missed!

7. Let Loose At A Park

Tokyo might be an urban jungle but this mega city is home to many beautiful parks. Whether it’s your neighborhood kiddie park or something bigger, you won’t have to go far to find a park in Tokyo.

6. Make Fishy Friends At An Aquarium

Aquariums aren’t just for escaping the summer heat. Head inside to warm up on a chilly day and make some new friends while you’re at it.

You can’t help but be fascinated by all the different trains that make Tokyo the mega city that it is. We’ve already visited the Tokyo Metro Museum several times and most recently visited the Railway Museum in Omiya, Saitama. What’s next for us? Perhaps Keio Rail Land (combined with a trip to Hug Hug!). The best thing about train museums is that nearly all the exhibits are hands-on, so little ones can touch and push buttons to their heart’s content.

Japan is an island nation, but did you know Tokyo has its own islands as well?! We visited Oshima in the spring time to see hydrangeas but as the weather cools, beautiful camellia (椿 | tsubaki) will be in bloom.
