I wrote in my 2018 goal post that I wanted to return to my fashion/beauty roots... but I had no idea it would come so quickly.
Last week, I completed an article for Live Japan reviewing Daiso’s 100 yen cosmetics and skincare. Later that day, my LB Cosmetics eyeliner arrived. Then two days later, I got another shipment of sponsored makeup
Now comes another beauty related post (I know, I know – where’s the Japan stuff and baby spam?)
Why? I just want to improve my skincare and beauty routine using affordable products that I can easily find here in Japan. And, unlike the Korean 26 step beauty regime, most of the products are on the Japanese market are made with time efficiency in mind.
One product that I’ve been using is this best-selling hot cleansing gel by Skinvill.
It ranks as number one on cosme.net. Cosme.net, by the way, is Japan’s leading beauty skin care site. (Imagine if Sephora and Amazon had a child. That’s Cosme.net in a nutshell.)
After debating if I should try it or not, I caved in when Rakuten was having its “Super Sale.” On top of that Skinvill had a fabulous buy 2 get 1 free sale with an addition 500 yen off. And, I had just enough in Rakuten Super Points to get three bottles for essentially FREE.

I bought both the regular citrus scent and cherry blossom scent. I gotta fuel my love for limited edition things somehow!
Made in Japan, Skinvill’s lineup of skincare products are formulated with more than 90% of beautifying ingredients that fight dryness, acne, blemishes, and darkening.
I tried both the cherry blossom and citrus gel for two weeks. Onto the review…
Using the Gel
Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of the gel onto the palm your hands and gently rub into your skin with your fingers. The gel immediately starts to warm, creating a refreshing tingling feeling. You really get the impression that the gel is getting down to business.
The original Skinvill Hot Cleansing Gel is a thick, pale orange gel with a rich, invigorating citrus scent that is not overpowering. The cherry blossom version is nicely complimented with a translucent pink color that looks good enough to eat. (Both the citrus version and cherry blossom versions, by the way, taste pretty good, actually.)
Rinse off with warm water.
No need to wash your face again, and there’s definitely no need to pre-cleanse. In fact, I used this gel with a full face up makeup along with a 1-day lip tint, two different long-lasting eye makeup products, including fiber mascara. I didn’t even need to use eye makeup remover – that’s how effective Skinvill’s hot cleansing gel is.
In just 2 minutes, this honey-like gel rids my face of makeup, including waterproof eyeliner and fiber mascara. There’s no sticky residue and my skin feels fresh.
Maybe it’s just me, but there’s a bit of a lag in warming up when it comes to the cherry blossom version. Could it be something to do with the ingredients? I tried the cherry blossom version first and was shocked at how quickly the original version warmed up on my skin.
After using this product for several weeks, I appreciate how effectively Skinvill Hot Cleansing Gel works. I have noticed an improvement in the tone of my skin and will continue to use this gel.
Skinvill has previously released a summer and winter version of their gel. I would definitely pick up another tube of their limited edition cleanser and the original version as well.
